Principal’s Bison Bulletin for September 23

Good evening!  This is Principal Hettenbach from High Point Central High School with a message from the Boulevard.

This past week we added a 2nd layer of hall passes, called SmartPass. The system maximizes students being in class to receive the most instruction possible. All students have 3 opportunities to use the bathroom, twice during the instructional part of the day, once during lunch, and this does not include using the restroom during any transition, before and/or after school. Parents can also call us up to find out how many times their student is out of class, along with the amount of time. We had an amazing first week in using this system. Thank you in advance for your support in this.

From September 15 through October 15, we celebrate the unique history, diverse cultures, beautiful traditions and rich contributions of Hispanic Americans whose heritage has roots in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Enacted into law in August 1988, the month is celebrated over 30 days to recognize the number of Central American countries that achieved independence in September and October, including Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras.

Do you want to learn about Robots? Do you want to compete against other robots? Then join the Robotics club. The robotics club will meet Thursdays after school in room 114. For more info, see Mr. Watkins or Mr. Yingling.

The Learning Hub is making its return on September 24th, 2024. The program offers flexible opportunities for students to receive academic and social-emotional supports, tutoring, and enrichment outside regular school hours. Learning Hub will occur on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (4:30PM – 6PM ). In the Media Center. • Students need to bring their ID cards • Transportation and food provided

Attention future travelers! Are you interested in traveling to Costa Rica and Panama in the summer of 2026?! Come join the interest meeting Tuesday September 24th, after school at 5:00 in room 202 with Ms. Wanichko and Mrs. Ranew!

College and Career Promise Info Sessions will be held in the Koury Auditorium on GTCC’s Jamestown Campus on September 19 and September 25 from 6-7. Come out to learn about dual enrollment, the application process and qualifications.

The 2024 NC College Fair will be held on Monday, September 30 at the Greensboro Coliseum. High Point Central will provide transportation for any senior that would like to attend. Permission slips can be picked up in counseling. All signed forms should be returned by Wednesday, September 25th. Late forms will not be accepted.

East Carolina University will be having a free application week on September 23rd-27th. Please speak with Mr. Harper for details and requirements if you are interested.

The PSAT will be administered to all Sophomores and Juniors on October 1st. Freshmen and Seniors will be learning asynchronously. Attendance for Freshmen and Seniors will be taken by the teachers acknowledging work completed on Canvas for each class. Sophomores and Juniors who do not attend will be required to take the test on a make up day.

Class of 2024 Girls, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR, Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree. From now until November 1, 2024, students can submit by email an essay or a video skit pertaining to a historical and patriotic figure of your choosing for a chance to receive a medal, a certificate award, and a check for $500 to spend on whatever you like! This is on behalf of the Guilford Battle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to share an exciting essay contest opportunity for high school students in Guilford County. Stop by the Counseling office and speak to Ms. Totten for details.

I hope you have heard the amazing news! High Point Central was named the prestigious Hubert Humphrey Most Improved School at the state of the county banquet. This is a testament to the passion and perseverance of our amazing staff, the students that work hard, use resources in front of them and set high goals. The parents and guardians who advocate for their student while also supporting the school, and of course our powerful alumni and community members! If you have not seen the news segment, simply go to google and type in High Point Central Hubert Humphrey award. WFMY did a great job!

As we continue to navigate through the year, please make sure you are following our athletics clear bag policy.

As a reminder, if you are new to our school, we send an all call message in English every Sunday during the school year at 6:30, followed by Spanish at 7:00. If you do not want to listen to one of the two messages, a simple hang up will be sufficient. These messages will also be sent to your cell phone as a text link as well as to your e-mail address you may have on file. If you do not receive these messages on those platforms but wish to do so, please let us know.
